Buying in bulk comes with a variety of benefits, and it is much easier to do. I like how it reduces the effort and the time I spend in the supermarket.
It means even more savings to me as it cuts the frequency of impulsive purchases mom like us always do, am I right?
Anyway, potatoes are just one of the foods that I usually buy in bulk. It is my favorite vegetable since it is so versatile. There are countless ways I can use it in the kitchen.
However, shopping in bulk would also mean that the potatoes you purchased about a week ago could be stored in the cupboard for a long time.
Now it leads me to the question, how long do potatoes last? This is important to keep your kitchen safe and prevent any health risks that a rotten potato can bring.
So I did my research, and today, I will be sharing what I’ve learned in this article.

How Long Can You Keep Your Potatoes?
So we’ve’ come to the big question, how long do potatoes last?
The average shelf life of potatoes depends on several factors, such as the type of potato, the method of preparing it, and where you are storing it.
When it comes to fresh, raw potatoes, they can last for one to two weeks, as long as you are storing them at a normal room temperature. While raw sweet potatoes can last much longer at about three to five weeks, they can even last up to three months when stored in the refrigerator.
Cooked potatoes, on the other hand, have a short storage life. Leaving them at a room temperature that ranges between 40 to 140-degrees Fahrenheit can turn them rancid within just two to three hours.
How To Tell If The Potatoes Have Gone Bad
There are plenty of signs to tell if the potatoes have already gotten bad. Below are just a few of the most common traits.
- There’s mold formation. Wet potatoes often develop molds. If this happens, you have to throw the potatoes out immediately.
- It doesn’t smell good. Its appearance will start to wither and emits a rotten or unpleasant odor.
- There are soft spots. You will see soft spots in areas that also have discoloration.
Storing potatoes in an area where there is so much humidity can start to grow white sprouts. This indicates that the starch found naturally inside the potato has started to convert into sugar.
Well, technically, this doesn’t’ mean that the potato has already gotten bad, you. You have to cut off the sprouts before using the vegetable. Just knife to get rid of that sprout; however, the quality of the potato may reduce. If there’s wrinkling that comes along with the sprouts, you should quickly throw the potato away.
Also, suppose you leave the potato exposed to direct light, whether natural sunlight or artificial, you will start to see green spots beginning to develop. In that case, the potato will have a bitter taste. Green spots on potatoes could signify that the toxin solanine has been developed in the vegetable.
It would help if you were careful since this toxin can cause poisoning. The signs of solanine poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea and headaches.
So make sure that you remove any green spots before using the potato. Some people even find it best to get rid of the potatoes altogether fully.
It would help if you disposed of any bad potato as quickly as possible, or else it will speed up the spoilage of any other potato in the same storage.
How To Prolong Storage Life of Potatoes
But I have some good news for you! There are so many ways that you can do to extend the storage life of potatoes. The ideal storage conditions are as follows:
- Low humidity level
- Cold temperature, about 45 to 50-degrees Fahrenheit
- No light
I know this is kind of weird, but the best place to store your potatoes is at your home would be in the basement or the cellar.
You can just spread them over the hard surface or place them in a basket or a brown paper bag; make sure you allow air circulation. This would be very beneficial.
There’s also another trick that I’ve’ learned, and this involved some sweet apples. I know you hate those ugly sprouts that form on your potatoes within just a couple of weeks.
Well, it turns out that an apple a day can keep these sprouts away and help the potatoes last longer.
This is because ripe apple emits ethylene gas which can hinder growth. This is such good news as sprouts in potatoes can signify that they are already losing valuable nutrients.
If potatoes in the group have gotten bruised or have already been cut open, make sure that you quickly remove them from the rest as they will oxidize and make the whole group go rotten sooner than expected.
For the potatoes, you’ve already cut but can no longer use for your recipe, prolong their storage life by placing the potatoes into a bowl filled with salted water as quickly as you cut them.
Well, we know for a fact that potatoes don’t come cheap. This is the main reason I include this vegetable in the list of foods I buy in bulk.
So if you’re like me, who is always trying to buy in several dozens to save a few bucks, then you have to make sure you know how long do potatoes last and how to store them properly.
As I have already mentioned, placing them in the fridge is not the best way to prolong their freshness, but storing them in a cool, dark place does. And since this vegetable is very versatile, try your best to use it every time you cook.
